The Trump administration has directed a key federal artificial intelligence testing unit to stop publishing public assessments of advanced AI models over national security concerns as increasingly powerful systems enter the marketplace, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Administration officials, including National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, have instructed the Commerce Department’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation to suspend publication of its model evaluations while President Donald Trump’s new AI executive order is implemented, according to people familiar with the matter.

The move follows growing concern within the administration over the capabilities of newly released AI systems, including Anthropic’s Mythos model and other advanced technologies, that officials fear could facilitate sophisticated cyberattacks or assist in the development of biological weapons.

The White House has been working with leading AI developers, including Anthropic and OpenAI, to control access to their most advanced models and ensure adequate safeguards are in place to protect national security.

The decision to halt CAISI’s public reporting has exposed divisions within the administration over how AI oversight should be conducted, according to the Journal.

Some officials view the move as evidence that Cairncross and his allies are seeking greater authority over model evaluations, while others argue the executive order creates a new oversight structure that overlaps with responsibilities CAISI already performs.

White House spokeswoman Liz Huston defended the administration’s approach, saying multiple agencies are involved in carrying out Trump’s AI agenda.
