'Trumpapalooza" is forcing GOP to match Trump's relentless pace

The Republican National Committee going into the weekend released details about its first midterm convention ahead of the November elections – a sign that President Donald Trump’s tenacious and grueling work schedule is finally rubbing off on the GOP and is leaders after years of trying to keep pace.

Whether advancing his agenda, holding events, or dominating the news cycle, Trump’s pace has been notoriously relentless. For weeks after his June 30 post, the broader party apparatus appeared to be playing catch-up—planning in the background while the president kept moving.

With the RNC announcing the host city as Dallas, Texas, and state parties beginning to circulating VIP ticket packages reaching $20,000 – with some California packages hitting $250,000 – the party infrastructure appears to be operating at the tempo Trump has set since his formal first-term nomination in 2016 – as Republican look to hold onto a Senate seat in Texas and keep control of upper chamber.

“The president loves Dallas, and, you know, Texas is a perfect spot to host something that’s never been, never has happened before,” RNC Chairman Joe Gruters told the NBC News affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth. “We’re excited about it. We got three competitive congressional districts. We have a Senate district we’re watching.”

Trump floated, then formally announced the now-inaugural Republican national midterm convention on Truth Social on June 30, calling it a “truly Historic Event” set for September 9-10 at a Dallas venue (widely expected to be the American Airlines Center).

Gruters has also branded the event “Trumpapalooza.”

It’s not just RNC officials who are struggling to keep up. Trump’s own administration has joked about the president’s work ethic and endurance, often evidenced in the most public of ways – posting on social media at all hours of the night.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Trump’s stamina by stating he has “never seen him fall asleep” in meetings, noting instead that “the guy doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem because he calls me at 2 in the morning” and at 5 a.m., and works late into the night.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum revealed that Trump calls him at all hours, including as late as 2 a.m. during the campaign and up to 11:45 p.m. recently, often starting conversations by asking if he woke him up.

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles described Trump as working “24/7” and never sleeping, portraying his schedule as so demanding that it is a “killer” for staff when traveling.

Pam Bondi, when attorney general, said none of Trump’s team “can keep up with him” and “none of us know when he sleeps,” joking that “he’s working all the time, and it’s just constant for him.”

The anecdotes about Trump’s indefatigability are not limited to his present term.

Former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney stated that “the man doesn’t sleep” and “he slept about four hours a night when I was chief of staff,” adding that Trump views sleep as a weakness and would wake staff on trips.

Host Committee Steps Up

The Host Committee on Wednesday named its leadership: co-chairs including Dallas developer and former RNC finance Chairman Ray Washburne and wife Heather Washburne (a veteran Republican fundraiser), entrepreneur/investor Kenny Troutt and philanthropist Lisa Troutt, and former Trump administration official Trent Morse.

Former RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is serving as senior adviser. The group’s mandate is to handle logistics, fundraising, welcome tens of thousands of attendees, support local businesses, and promote the region.

Simultaneously, reporting revealed the event’s real structure: state parties are treating it as a major candidate fundraiser rather than a traditional convention with voting or delegate business. It’s framed as a high-energy rally with entertainment, designed to “rally the troops,” generate resources for 2026 races, and remind voters that midterms matter.

Proceeds stay with state parties for their own candidates. Volunteers can attend more affordably, but the model is clearly built to maximize dollars and donor engagement in one concentrated burst.

The RNC has been explicit in its intent to defy midterm history (where the president’s party often struggles), “We’ve got to do things a little differently.” This convention is that difference. It was Trump’s idea, now being executed with Trump-level hustle.
