Texas House Democrats on Thursday signaled they could end their walkout and boycott of the GOP’s new redistricting map on Friday if two criteria are met.

Democrats fled Texas earlier this month in order to avoid giving Republicans the quorum it needs to approve the new Congressional map. The map would redraw districts in the Lone Star state that would give Republicans a greater majority on the national level by potentially flipping five seats.

Texas’ House Democratic Caucus said they would end the walkout if the Texas Legislature ends its first special session on Friday, and if California lawmakers introduce a proposal that would equalize the Texas gains, per Politico. California lawmakers could introduce their map as early as Thursday.

“Now, as Democrats across the nation join our fight to cause these maps to fail their political purpose, we’re prepared to bring this battle back to Texas under the right conditions and to take this fight to the courts,” Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu said.

The Texas walkout has prompted Democratic leaders in other states to also consider a mid-decade redistricting effort, including New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. In fact, New York redistricted in 2024 with a new congressional map.

Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott said his state’s efforts come as blue states are already gerrymandered.
