Suspect in shooting of two National Guard troops pleads not guilty

A man accused of shooting two National Guard troops near the White House in November, killing one, faces a new indictment. If convicted, he would be eligible for the death sentence.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, was arraigned on 17 counts, including first-degree murder, in the new indictment. He originally pleaded not guilty in January to nine charges related to the shooting, the Associated Press reported, and he pleaded not guilty to the new charges on Tuesday.
Lakanwal’s defense attorneys will have the opportunity to meet with prosecutors and present any evidence they believe argues against a death sentence before the Justice Department decides if it will seek it.
Spc. Sarah Beckstrom was killed and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe was critically wounded in the shooting. They were deployed as part of a surge in law enforcement in Washington, D.C., that President Donald Trump had ordered last summer.
