New York expected to sign a statewide moratorium on data centers

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday that will enact a one-year pause on the construction of large data centers.
The order, which would be the first statewide moratorium on the facilities in the U.S., will prohibit the permitting of data centers that use 50 megawatts or more to operate, the New York Times reported.
While the moratorium is in effect, the state will create a regulatory framework for assessing how the facilities impact the environment.
The New York Legislature passed a measure last month that went even further, but Hochul, who has expressed support for artificial intelligence in the past, has not signed it. She has said she’s considering it.
