As America begins to celebrate its 250th birthday on Saturday, there are nearly 1 million outages being reported across multiple states.

The current total of 956, 388 homes, according to tracking site PowerOutage, accounts for states in the Midwest and Northeast that have been impacted by severe weather and extreme heat.

That number, which will fluctuate throughout the day as crews work to restore power, is for households, meaning that the number of people impacted by these outages is likely to be much larger.

The outages come as some areas are expected to experience severe weather and stifling heat again on Saturday.
