Tropical Storm Andrea has been named as the first storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season for 2025, an advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Tuesday.

“Andrea becomes the first tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season,” an NHC spokesperson told Newsweek. “The storm is currently about 1,205 miles west of the Azores and does not pose any threat to land. Additionally, there are no indirect risks to the U.S. associated with this system.”

Why It Matters
The Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1, has seen a quiet start, whereas several tropical storms and hurricanes have already formed in the Pacific Ocean, which began its season two weeks earlier on May 15.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is anticipating an above-average Atlantic hurricane season this year, although not as active as last year.

What To Know
Andrea, shown on the NHC map, is moving east-northeast at about 17 mph with sustained maximum winds of 40 miles per hour, according to the alert.

The storm is expected to continue on its path for at least another day, the NHC said. The forecast anticipates it will maintain tropical storm strength through Tuesday night but weaken into a post-tropical depression by Wednesday morning.
