ChatGPT has landed a Jets player in serious legal trouble after authorities alleged he used the AI tool to help conceal evidence of a horrific crime. Former New York Jets linebacker Darron Lee appeared in a Hamilton County, Tennessee courtroom Wednesday for his arraignment, five months after his February arrest.

He entered no plea, which under Tennessee law functions as a not guilty plea. The hearing was brief, but the case behind it is anything but – and the most damaging piece of evidence against him has nothing to do with physical evidence at the scene.

Lee was selected 20th overall by the Jets in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He started 36 games over three New York seasons, recorded 228 tackles and 8.5 sacks across 58 career games, and was on the Kansas City Chiefs roster for their Super Bowl LIV championship win over San Francisco, though he was inactive for the game. He signed a four-year, $10.22 million rookie deal with the Jets and last played in 2020 with the Buffalo Bills.

Lee is charged with first-degree murder in the February 2026 death of his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpetuo, 29, who was found dead inside the couple’s Ooltewah home. Autopsy findings documented 12 separate injuries including severe brain trauma, a broken neck, multiple stab wounds, a bite mark on her thigh, bone fractures, and significant facial injuries. Investigators pronounced Perpetuo dead at the scene.

The prosecution’s most unusual piece of evidence involves Lee allegedly consulting ChatGPT dozens of times. According to Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp, “He has conversations, dozens of conversations, back and forth with ChatGPT over a two-day period about what he did”. Wamp added that Lee asked the chatbot both how to cover up what happened and what to say to 911.
