Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a rare Democrat in an overwhelmingly red state, is making waves on the campaign trail as the party searches for a new leader in 2028.

Considered the most popular Democratic governor in the country, Beshear ticked up to sixth place in the latest Emerson College Polling survey of a hypothetical Democratic presidential field — climbing 7 percentage points since last summer to sit just a point behind former Vice President Harris, the party’s 2024 nominee.

The Bluegrass State moderate, term-limited as governor, has said he’s “comfortable” with chatter about a possible White House bid, though he has stressed his focus on 2026 as he leads the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) through the midterms.

Democrats, however, are paying close attention to his cross-country travels to political events and campaign stops as the party’s weigh their options in the fight for 2028.

“Democrats are hungry for new leadership, proven leadership, and folks who get results. As chair of the DGA, Gov. Beshear is raising his visibility, he is helping candidates around the country, he’s obviously getting to meet a lot of Democratic activists and donors,” said Kentucky Democratic strategist Mark Riddle.
