Legendary singer Bonnie Tyler died at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal, her family said.

In a Thursday social media post from Tyler’s account, her family said she died from the illness for which she was receiving treatment.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy,” the post read.

Tyler, who was born Gaynor Hopkins, received emergency intestinal surgery in May, and she was placed in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery, her team had said. She came out of the coma in June, but a spokesperson noted she remained in intensive care, as she was “very unwell.”

At the time, she was scheduled for a tour across Europe. Her summer concert dates were canceled due to her medical condition.

The Welsh singer, known for her raspy voice, is famous for her hit songs, Grammy-nominated “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and power ballad “Holding Out for a Hero,” written by producer Jim Steinman in the 1980s after his work with another famed singer, Meatloaf.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “saddened” to hear about her death and dubbed her “one of Britain’s greatest recording artists.”

Wales Secretary of State Jo Stevens, in a post on X, called Tyler “a Welsh music icon” and “the sound of her teenage years.”

Tyler is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan. The couple had no children.
