President Donald Trump on Monday said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., should not begin the summer recess until the chamber passed the SAVE America Act "or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER."
Trump used Truth Social to intensify pressure on Senate Republicans to remain in Washington until Congress approves the election security legislation, which he has made one of his top legislative priorities.
"John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to 'leave town' until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER," Trump wrote.
"Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever looming Debt Ceiling disaster."
Trump also argued Democrats would eliminate the legislative filibuster if they regain Senate control, adding, "The Dumocrats will do it on day one, and can't believe how lucky they got with this Senate leadership. Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!"
The president's latest appeal comes as several conservative senators are pressing Thune to cancel the Senate's traditional August recess until lawmakers vote on the SAVE America Act, according to Newsmax.
Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said he will object to any effort to send senators home before the legislation receives a vote.
"@LeaderJohnThune, I hereby object to any effort to put the Senate into recess in August — at least until such time as the Senate has passed the SAVE America Act," Lee wrote Sunday on X.
Lee has drawn support from fellow Republicans, including Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., Ashley Moody, R-Fla., and Jim Banks, R-Ind., all of whom say Congress should remain in session until the election integrity measure reaches the Senate floor.
The SAVE America Act would require documented proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote, mandate photo identification for voting, and tighten rules governing mail-in ballots.
House Republicans have approved versions of the legislation, but it has repeatedly stalled in the Senate amid unanimous Democratic opposition.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has criticized the proposal as "Jim Crow 2.0," while Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., has argued the measure lacks the 60 votes needed to overcome a Senate filibuster and has declared the bill effectively "dead" without bipartisan support, The Hill reported.
Trump has repeatedly called on Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, arguing it would allow the GOP to quickly enact the SAVE America Act, pass a budget, and address the nation's debt ceiling.
Thune has responded that Republicans don't have enough votes to abolish the filibuster and has maintained that Democrats, not Senate GOP leadership, are blocking the election reform bill.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt recently warned that Trump's "patience is running out" over the Senate's failure to advance the legislation, further raising pressure on Republican leadership.
