A 76-year-old Texas woman was killed Friday night after a Tesla crashed through her home, and the driver told authorities the vehicle was operating on Autopilot at the time, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.
Authorities said Michael Butler was driving a Tesla Model 3 eastbound in Katy, Texas, at about 8 p.m. local time when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a brick home at 1907 Blooming Park Lane.
The Tesla struck Martha Avila, 76, who was inside the home. Authorities said Avila was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where she later died of her injuries.
According to the sheriff's office, Butler told investigators the Tesla was operating on Autopilot when the crash occurred.
Officials said Butler showed no signs of intoxication and cooperated with investigators at the scene.
Butler was also injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Newsmax reached out to Tesla for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
The incident is being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division, according to authorities.
