Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., argued Tuesday that "government will never solve racism," saying genuine progress comes through personal relationships rather than organizations that profit from social division.
"Government will never solve racism," McCormick said on Newsmax's "National Report." "Human relationships, sitting down at meals, people interacting with people is what solves racism."
The Georgia congressman, a member of the House Oversight Committee, made the comments while discussing allegations involving the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has been accused of funding informants tied to extremist groups while raising money to combat hate.
McCormick said the allegations were "not surprising" and claimed some organizations depend on conflict to sustain fundraising efforts.
"There's a lot of organizations that literally fund themselves off of the hate and discontent that they create," he said.
"They like the contention, they like the hatred, they like the discontent because that's how they raise their money."
McCormick said, "Who knew that hate could be a cash cow?"
He said the accusations suggest the organization may have been "purposely funneling money to the KKK so they could drum up more hatred, more civil unrest, so that they could get more donations coming in."
While acknowledging the allegations "won't be easy to prove," McCormick argued that racial tensions have been reignited by some groups claiming to fight racism.
"These groups basically rile people up and talk about racism as if it was still a problem with our young people," he said. "Anybody who knows and watches people in high school knows that they have very little tension until they're taught to be racist."
McCormick also criticized charitable organizations that spend heavily on administration rather than their stated missions.
"There are a lot of charities that exist simply to fund their administrators," he said, adding that some organizations "start off with a great principle intent, but then lose themselves because they spend all their money on the administration and not actually helping the people they're supposed to."
