Lee Greenwood to Newsmax: America250 Events Should Unite Americans

Country music legend Lee Greenwood told Newsmax on Friday that Americans should put politics aside and embrace the nation's upcoming 250th birthday celebration, saying he's disappointed some performers have withdrawn from America250 events.

Appearing on "National Report," Greenwood discussed his role in the Great American State Fair, which kicks off June 24 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The event will feature representatives from all 50 states, patriotic programming, musical performances and an America250 rally with President Donald Trump.

Greenwood said he's slated to perform with the United States Marine Band, known as "The President's Own," as part of the opening festivities.

"I will be singing there, and I believe it's with the United States Marine Band, The President's Own, and introducing the president, I hope, of course," he said. "That will be exciting. We'll have multiple media events that afternoon ... kicking off the Great American State Fair."

The "God Bless the U.S.A." singer said he only recently came to appreciate the full scope of the event and its connection to every state in the union.

"I don't know why it was called the State Fair," Greenwood said. "I realize now there'll be a representative from every state there at the fair, which goes on through the Fourth of July and on beyond.

"So, it's going to be a long day, but it could be fun for me – the rally, of course, with President Trump and an exciting time on stage with him, which never gets old for me."

When asked about entertainers who have declined invitations to participate in America250 events because they do not want to be associated with politics, Greenwood said the country's semiquincentennial celebration should be viewed as something much larger than partisan divisions.

"I'm saddened by that," he said. "When events like this come along, this is not necessarily something you focus on Democrat, Republican, independent. This is a focus on America and its history, and you need to study history to find out where we are now."

Greenwood said his perspective is shaped in part by his desire to leave a strong nation to future generations.

"I have two sons, Dalton and Parker, who I love very much, our new daughter-in-law, and now we have a new grandson, Theodore, who is 7 weeks old," he said. "I want this republic to go on for more than 250 more years."

Greenwood argued that Americans should embrace the anniversary as citizens regardless of political affiliation and noted that the celebration could also help boost tourism and showcase the country to visitors from around the world.

"We're building tourism now for the United States," he said. "I'm excited to be part of that as well."

As part of that effort, Greenwood revealed he recently completed a new tourism-themed jingle that he hopes will help attract international visitors back to America.

"We looked at the fact that tourism had dropped down somewhat for the United States, so I was asked to write a new jingle for American tourism," he said. "I've done that with my friend Nick Adams. We'll take that to the president and see if we can have worldwide tourism come back to the United States."
