Trump Vows to Confront D.C. Mayoral Nominee Janeese Lewis George

President Donald Trump will meet with Washington, D.C., Council member Janeese Lewis George, the Democrat nominee for mayor, while warning that he will not allow what he described as her far-left policies to undermine public safety or reverse recent progress in the nation's capital.

Trump made the remarks in Truth Social post, where he sharply criticized Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist who won the Democrat primary earlier this month and is widely expected to become the District's next mayor because of the city's overwhelming Democrat-leaning electorate.

"Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying things," Trump wrote.

He added that he intends to meet with Lewis George but said he would oppose any effort to implement those policies.

"I will meet with Janeese Lewis George, but must forewarn everyone that Washington, D.C., is again a Safe and Prestigious Community. Many people, including myself, have worked long and hard to get it there, and we will not let it be destroyed by a Communist adherent who has no intention to, Make Washington Great Again!"

Trump has repeatedly argued that the federal government has a responsibility to ensure safety in the nation's capital, which operates under limited home rule and remains subject to congressional oversight. His administration has made crime reduction and immigration enforcement in Washington a priority while criticizing local Democrats over policing and cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Lewis George defeated former D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie in the June 16 Democratic Party primary, a victory that positioned her as the clear favorite in November's general election to succeed outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser. Democrats dominate voter registration in the District, and the party's nominee has historically prevailed in mayoral elections.

A Ward 4 council member since 2021, Lewis George has described herself as a democratic socialist and campaigned on lowering child care costs, expanding affordable and rent-controlled housing, increasing government investment in public services and resisting what she has characterized as federal overreach into district affairs, particularly involving immigration enforcement and policing.

Her victory comes as democratic socialist candidates have gained momentum in several major U.S. cities, including New York and Seattle, reflecting a broader shift among some urban Democratic voters toward progressive candidates focused on affordability and expanded public services.

Following her primary victory, Lewis George suggested Trump's earlier criticism helped energize her supporters.

"It motivated people to get to the polls," she told reporters on election night. "I heard that today when I went to the polls, that residents came up to me and said, 'You know what? If Trump doesn't like you, I love you.'"

Lewis George has also pledged to defend the District's autonomy as she prepares for what is expected to be a contentious relationship with the White House if she wins the November election. Her campaign has argued that local officials, not the federal government, should determine Washington's policies on housing, policing and social services.
