Trump, Allies Seek to Erase Impeachments From House Record

President Donald Trump and congressional allies are discussing a push to formally expunge his two impeachments from the House record, a move supporters say would help correct what they see as partisan attacks against the president.

The effort has gained traction among some Republicans after the Trump administration declassified material related to the investigation behind Trump's first impeachment.

Supporters argue the documents undermine the credibility of key witnesses and bolster claims that the proceedings were politically motivated.

“It should be done because I did nothing wrong,” Trump told The Wall Street Journal in a phone interview. “It was a rigged deal — it was a whole rigged situation.”

People familiar with the matter told the outlet that lawmakers are not expected to take up the measure until after the November midterm elections.

Trump has shared reports about the expungement effort on Truth Social but has downplayed his own role in promoting it.

“If they want to do it, I’m honored by it,” Trump told the Journal.

The House impeached Trump in 2019 over his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and again in 2021 following the Jan. 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol Building. The Senate acquitted him both times.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said discussions about expungement have intensified in recent weeks.

Johnson told the Journal he has spoken with Trump as well as legal allies including Harvard Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz and attorney Jay Sekulow.

“I think it makes a lot of sense the more the evidence comes out, the more we know they really were sham impeachments,” Johnson told the Journal.

“We were saying it at the time, now we know,” Johnson added. “And they make a very compelling case that it should be expunged from the record, because it was a hyperpartisan attack job.”

Johnson acknowledged the issue is not at the top of Congress' agenda but said lawmakers should ultimately address it.

“It is a priority and something that Congress should make right,” he told the Journal.

The renewed push follows reporting by conservative journalist John Solomon on newly declassified material tied to the first impeachment.

Trump later shared clips on Truth Social featuring Solomon and Dershowitz discussing whether the information could serve as the basis for expunging the impeachment.

“I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be done,” Dershowitz said in a clip shared by Trump.

Dershowitz later told the Journal that “there are efforts to try to do that” with Trump's impeachments.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., introduced a resolution in April that would declare both impeachments "expunged, as if such Articles had never passed the full House of Representatives."

The measure has attracted 23 Republican co-sponsors.

But not all Republicans are on board with it.

“Maybe they’ve given up on holding the majority?” retiring Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., told the Journal, calling the effort “silly.”

“What happened is history,” he added.
