President Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan told Newsmax on Tuesday that Democrat governors opposing the deportation of criminal illegal migrants are not acting out of compassion, but as part of a long-term political strategy to increase Democrat power nationwide.
Appearing on Newsmax's "National Report," Homan named New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill as two of the Democrats fighting the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.
Asked why any politician would want to keep criminal illegal migrants in their state, Homan pointed to a couple of reasons.
"Number one is about hatred for President Trump," he said. "They don't want President Trump to have a win."
Homan said the Democrats' opposition is also tied to the Biden administration's handling of the border, which he argued was intentional, not accidental.
"Where was she with four years of open borders, where millions of illegal aliens, many of them criminals, released in the United States?" he said, referring to Hochul. "Where was she then? She was complicit. She didn't say a thing."
According to Homan, Democrats are now trying to protect the same population they allowed into the country.
"That four years of open borders wasn't an accident," he said. "It wasn't mismanagement. It wasn't incompetence. That was by design."
The plan, Homan told Newsmax, was to release millions of illegal migrants into sanctuary cities, then allow them to be counted in the next census after the Trump-era census rule was overturned.
"Which means what? More seats in the House for the Dems," he said.
The Trump immigration official said Democrats are also banking on a future Democrat administration granting legal status to millions of people in the country illegally.
"This is about future political power," Homan said.
Homan said Democrats have made clear that they value political power over the safety of Americans.
"They don't care about national security. They don't care about public safety," Homan said. "All they care about is future political power."
"They sold this country out for future political power," he added.
Homan also rejected attacks on the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, saying he visited unannounced on Saturday and shared a meal with the detainees.
That meal included "spaghetti and meat sauce and salad and charro beans and green beans and rolls and butter and fruit drink," he said.
"I'm a pretty big guy, and I didn't even finish the whole meal," Homan said. "I couldn't finish the whole meal."
He said complaints about food and medical care are political lies aimed at ending ICE enforcement.
"This is about shutting down ICE detention," Homan said. "This is about stopping ICE. This is about abolishing ICE."
"It disgusts me that a member of Congress or a governor would lie about conditions of detainment only to get to their political end, which is end ICE detention, end ICE operations," he said. "And it's simply not going to happen."
