Matt Schlapp, chair of the Conservative Political Action Conference, told Newsmax that despite the traditional odds, President Donald Trump and the GOP party have a "fighting chance" to keep congressional majorities in the upcoming midterm elections.
Schlapp told The Record with Greta Van Susteren on Wednesday that a key reason behind his claim is what Democrats are allowing to happen within their party — "it's because these are lunatics that they're nominating," he said.
Schlapp said emerging leaders in the Democrat party are showing "Marxist" tendencies.
"New York City started," he said, "It used to be the squad.
It was a handful of these very anti-Israel Marxist women in the House and then it grew in the House.
Now they're going to be a majority of their Democratic caucus if these trends continue."
The CPAC Chairman said holding a GOP midterm convention should play out well for the GOP.
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the party will hold its first midterm convention, a two-day event in Dallas that he said will celebrate his administration's accomplishments and energize supporters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the convention will take place Sept. 9-10 and described it as a historic event for the Republican Party.
Schlapp said it will be a boost for the party.
"I am happy it's in Dallas," he said, "because I think it helps Ken Paxton in that Senate race where polls came out this week that showed it was a dead heat.
"That's very important for Republicans to hold on to that Republican seat," he said.
Schlapp said the idea of a midterm convention may be a little faded, but it may be a boost for the GOP this year.
"They're expensive," he said, "You turn a lot of money that could go to campaigns.
"But got to give Trump credit. It's novel. It busts the old system.
"He's got his own idea of how to do things and that's stuff I love," Schlapp said.
