Pollster Patrick Allocco told Newsmax on Monday that President Donald Trump's additional endorsement of Alan Wilson in the South Carolina Republican primary runoff for governor puts Trump in a no-lose situation, especially now that Wilson appears poised to win.
Trump initially endorsed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette in a five-candidate field. She received the most votes in the June 9 primary, ahead of Wilson, the state's attorney general, but only by 2.8%.
Narrowed to two candidates, Wilson surged to a more than 20-point lead heading into Tuesday's runoff, and Trump has said he likes both candidates.
"What happens now is that President Trump wins either way, since both candidates have Trump's blessing. Trump is no longer the dividing line," Allocco, founder of the Zoose Political Index, said on "Finnerty."
"Evette can say she had him first. Wilson can say he has him now," he continued.
"So this becomes a classic low-turnout runoff. Turnout, ground game, and who gets the eliminated candidates' voters back to the polls — that's what's going on now."
Both are attempting to succeed Henry McMaster, who is serving his second four-year term and is prohibited from running for a third.
The winner will face state Rep. Jermaine Johnson, who won the Democratic Party's primary with 59% of the vote.
