Former Trump deputy national security adviser KT McFarland told Newsmax that President Donald Trump is not far off from a workable deal with Iran.
McFarland told "National Report" on Tuesday that the obstacle has been the IRGC, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
"What's happened," she said, "is that the Revolutionary Guard looks and says, 'Well, those civilians, they're getting pretty close to a deal with the evil United States. Therefore, we're going to attack Israel,' knowing full well Israel will respond."
From there, McFarland offered, the process starts over again.
"And then [the IRGC] can claim that the ceasefire has been broken," she said, "and they're trying to sabotage a peace deal. At the end of the day, though, we're going to get a deal."
McFarland said the logistics of the negotiations between the Trump administration and Iran have not been clear to casual observers.
"They are getting very close to a deal," she explained, "but with who? … We're negotiating with the so-called pragmatists in Iran. Those are the civilians in the parliament and in the government."
And then, said McFarland, there is the IRGC in the background "who doesn't want to deal with anybody at any time. They just want their nuclear weapons, and they don't care where it goes."
She added that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are working to get regional Arab nations involved to help seal the deal. "So, it's the Abraham Accords, but it's more than that," said McFarland.
"It's the Abraham Accords or the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain and a few others. What he wants to do is get Kuwait and the Saudis and others in it so that any ability to enforce whatever the agreement is, it's not just going to fall to us, but it'll happen," she explained.
Trump said Tuesday that negotiators were in the "final throes" of peace talks following an easing of hostilities between Israel and Iran that may have threatened to reignite the months-long war.
Trump has repeatedly said that a peace agreement with Tehran is imminent, but the diplomatic solution has failed to solidify as the two sides traded military shots despite the ceasefire in place since April 8.
