Maine Republican State Rep. Katrina Smith told Newsmax that it is "incredibly embarrassing" for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner to be on the state’s election ballots.
Smith told "Bianca Across the Nation" on Tuesday that Democrats are regularly making excuses to prop up his campaign. "It's incredibly embarrassing for us that this is who they stand behind."
Smith said Platner’s personal life should eliminate him from consideration as a viable candidate. "This man that they want to overlook everything that he's done and put him into office," she said, "how can we respect someone like that?"
Platner and Democratic Party leaders supporting him are downplaying allegations that he sent explicit text messages, and a separate controversy surrounding a tattoo associated with Nazi imagery.
Smith said the issues go beyond the allegations to how Platner can work as a representative of the citizens of Maine. "How can we expect him to have our backs when he's only trying to protect his?" she said. "It's, it's incredibly embarrassing for us that this is who they stand behind."
Smith said the excuses aren’t enough. "They're making excuses for Graham Platner," she said. "Excuses after excuses.
"Well, they went to counseling. Well, it was a while ago. It wasn't a while ago.
"He's been married a couple years. It was very recent that all these things happened. This is not old news. This is who this man is currently."
She said this is not the first time Democrats propped up a questionable candidate. "Unfortunately, in Maine we've seen it over and over here with factions of the Democrat Party where they just don't see the reality of who these people are."
As Democrats and much of the national press focus on the Maine U.S. Senate primary and the ongoing controversies surrounding candidate Graham Platner, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., announced Monday night that he "will do everything I can to make sure Graham Platner is the next senator from Maine."
