Most Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of the economy and his overall job performance, according to a national poll that found widespread pessimism about economic conditions and concern about the nation's financial direction.

The American Research Group survey found that 67% of respondents disapprove of Trump's handling of economic issues, while 29% approve. Four percent were undecided.

Trump's overall job approval rating was similarly low. The poll found that 31% approve of the way he's performing as president, while 64% disapprove. Five percent were undecided.

The findings come as Americans continue to express deep concerns about the economy.

Seven in 10 respondents said the economy is getting worse, while just 8% said it's improving.

Another 17% said economic conditions are staying about the same.

Looking ahead, nearly 7 in 10 Americans said they expect the economy to be worse a year from now.

Only 9% predicted improvement over the next 12 months, while 15% said they expect conditions to remain unchanged.

The survey also found that public perceptions of the economy remain overwhelmingly negative. Nearly 8 in 10 respondents rated the economy as bad, very bad, or terrible. Just 14% described economic conditions as excellent, very good, or good.

More than half of those surveyed characterized the economy as terrible, the most negative response available.

Economic concerns extend beyond views of the national economy. The poll found that 61% of Americans rated their own household financial situation negatively, while 30% gave it a positive assessment.

Two-thirds of respondents said their household finances are getting worse compared with a much smaller share who said their finances are improving.

The poll also found that a majority of Americans believe the country is in a recession.

Sixty percent said the U.S. is in such a slowdown, while 22% said it's not. The remainder were unsure.

The results suggest that dissatisfaction with economic conditions continues to weigh heavily on public attitudes toward the president.

While presidents often face scrutiny over economic performance, the survey indicates that many Americans remain unconvinced that conditions are moving in the right direction.

The American Research Group poll was conducted May 16-20 among 1,100 adults nationwide and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
