Dershowitz to Newsmax: Hidden Names Amount to 'Epstein McCarthyism'

Alan Dershowitz accused the House Oversight Committee of practicing what he called "Epstein McCarthyism" by allowing anonymous adult accusers to make claims against prominent figures.

He told Newsmax on Friday that the practice violates basic constitutional principles and will be remembered as a national shame.

The retired Harvard Law School professor appeared on "The Record With Greta Van Susteren" hours after billionaire investor Leon Black walked out of his own closed-door interview and was later served with two subpoenas from committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., one for an under-oath deposition on July 16 and another for nondisclosure agreements Black allegedly signed with women in Jeffrey Epstein's orbit.

Dershowitz, who is scheduled for his own transcribed interview July 20, said he had no need for a subpoena.

"I volunteered to testify," he said, adding that he intends to use his appearance to expose what he described as a corrupted process.

He said a committee statement listed prominent names alongside redacted accusers, with one passage reading "blank, blank stated that she gave Dershowitz a massage on Epstein's plane, not a minor."

"How do you possibly respond to anonymous accusations?" Dershowitz said. "That's un-American. That's against the Constitution. That's against civil liberties."

He argued that minors deserve redaction, but adults forfeit their anonymity the moment they make a public accusation.

"Anybody who is over 18 who's accusing somebody has voluntarily put herself in the public light," he said. "You can't accuse people without giving your name.

"You can't accuse people without subjecting yourself to cross-examination."

Pressed on how the public should distinguish legitimate victims from false accusers, Dershowitz drew a sharp line.

He praised attorney Gloria Allred, who has represented a number of Epstein accusers, calling her "terrific, a very, very able woman."

But he warned against treating every claim as gospel.

"In our system of justice, we can't assume that all accusers are telling the truth," he said. "All women do not tell the truth, and all men do not lie.

"Many women tell the truth. Many men tell the truth. That's why we have a system."

Congress, he said, cannot suspend that system by shielding adult accusers.

"Some of them are lying. Some of their lawyers put them up to it. Some of them are telling the truth," Dershowitz said.

He drew a direct parallel to the Red Scare, predicting that in 10 years, the country will look back on the current proceedings with the same regret.

Dershowitz represented Epstein in the 2008 plea deal negotiations and has long denied any wrongdoing connected to the financier's crimes.

Virginia Giuffre, who once accused him of abuse, withdrew the allegation in 2022 and died by suicide last year.
