President Donald Trump offered praise for Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an interview with Axios, describing both as strong and effective leaders.

Trump spoke positively about Xi despite ongoing tensions between Washington and Beijing over trade, technology and security issues.

"President Xi is great," Trump said.

He also praised Modi, whose government has worked closely with the United States on economic and security matters while maintaining ties with other major powers.

Trump has long emphasized personal relationships with foreign leaders as an important component of diplomacy and frequently highlights his interactions with heads of state during discussions of international affairs.

The comments come as the administration continues negotiations with China on trade issues and seeks closer cooperation with India on economic and security initiatives.

India has become an increasingly important U.S. partner in efforts to counter China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
