President Donald Trump on Monday warned Iran that any killing of an American service member would bring a forceful U.S. response, saying he had issued the directive to the nation's top military leaders.

"Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over!" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Trump said the directive had been passed to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, and every military leader.

The warning marked the latest escalation in Trump's rhetoric toward Tehran as tensions remain high between the United States and Iran. Trump has repeatedly said his administration would respond aggressively to attacks on American troops and interests in the Middle East.

The United States maintains military personnel and installations throughout the region, including in Iraq, Syria, and the Persian Gulf. Those forces have faced threats from Iran and armed groups aligned with Tehran.

The U.S. military on Monday identified the two U.S. soldiers killed in Jordan in Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.

The War Department said in a statement that 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, were killed in Jordan. They were deployed in support of a U.S. mission against the Islamic State group, the statement said.

The U.S. military said 17 service members have been killed in the war with Iran.

An American service member was also killed in northern Iraq on Saturday during a "controlled detonation" of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, U.S. Central Command said Sunday. A second service member was wounded and was receiving medical treatment for a minor injury.

Iranian authorities said U.S. strikes in just the past three weeks have killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 500 others, including eight killed in a strike on a bridge Friday.
