Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley on Friday filed a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge and an infraction for an unlawful turning movement against Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after his brown convertible struck a parked Tesla in Yountville on July 3 and he drove off before his own car became disabled.

Alcohol was ruled out at the scene.

Deputies responded to a 911 call shortly after 2:30 p.m. that day to the 6700 block of Yount Street, where a witness reported watching a northbound brown convertible slam into the rear of a legally parked car on the shoulder, pause briefly, then continue on, according to the sheriff's account relayed through The Associated Press.

The impact shoved the parked Tesla's right tire onto the curb, leaving the vehicle heavily damaged.

Deputies located the convertible about a quarter-mile away on Yountville Cross Road, partially blocking traffic behind a California Highway Patrol unit.

Paul Pelosi told deputies he knew he had hit something but did not know what, investigators said, and he kept driving until the car became inoperable. A preliminary alcohol screening returned .00, and the sheriff's office said driving under the influence was ruled out.

No injuries were reported.

Because state law does not require an arrest for a property-damage misdemeanor of this kind, deputies did not take Paul Pelosi into custody at the scene and instead referred the case to Haley's office for review.

Investigators also submitted a driver re-evaluation referral to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, a step the agency described as routine for elderly drivers.

Haley's filing two weeks later converted that referral into a formal charge.

A spokesperson for the Pelosi family issued a brief statement shortly after the crash acknowledging responsibility for the damage.

"Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle," the spokesperson said, adding that the former speaker would not comment further on what the family called a private matter.

The filing marks Paul Pelosi's second driving case in Napa County in four years.

He pled guilty in August 2022 to misdemeanor DUI causing injury after a nighttime crash near Yountville and received three years of probation, a five-day jail term largely satisfied through custody credits and a courthouse work program, a three-month DUI education course, a one-year ignition interlock requirement, and $6,800 in restitution and fines.

Nancy Pelosi, who represents California's 11th Congressional District, announced in November 2025 that she would not seek re-election in 2026, ending a nearly four-decade House career.

An arraignment date on the new charge has not been announced.
