President Donald Trump's visit to Michigan on Monday underscores the battleground state's central role in both his economic agenda and Republican hopes for the midterm elections, Rep. Jack Bergman told Newsmax.

The Michigan Republican told ​"Wake Up America" that "the road to success goes through Michigan," ahead of the president's scheduled remarks on the economy at General Motors.

Bergman said Trump's decision to spotlight Michigan reflects the state's importance to American manufacturing and advanced industry, while also signaling the administration's commitment to keeping the state at the center of its economic agenda.

"The president coming here to Michigan today is a big deal, because of the fact that it shows his confidence and his priority for Michigan here over the next few months that will enable his second two years of this term to be successful," Bergman said.

He said Michigan's manufacturing base, coupled with its role as a perennial political battleground, makes the state critical to Republican success heading into November's midterms.

"It's about touting what Michigan has already done in manufacturing," Bergman said. "The president coming here reinforces his belief that Michigan is key to the midterm elections."

Trump's visit comes as Republicans seek to capitalize on economic messaging in a state long viewed as pivotal in presidential and congressional elections. Bergman described enthusiasm surrounding the president's appearance, saying Trump's visits energize supporters across the state.

"Everybody is excited that he's going to be here today, because everybody's spirits always get up when they say, 'Hey, the president's coming to town,'" he said. "His presence is magnetic."

Bergman also used the interview to encourage Republican voter participation as Michigan's primary election approaches. He noted that early in-person voting has already begun and urged voters to cast their ballots before the August 4 primary.

"It's a big day here, and we need to have a strong voter turnout to ensure that Michigan returns to a red state," Bergman said.
