Russia launched a pre-dawn barrage of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones against Ukraine's capital early Monday, wounding at least three people and damaging residential areas just one day before NATO leaders are set to gather in Turkey for a summit expected to focus heavily on the war.

Ukraine's air force said Kyiv came under attack from ballistic missiles in a combined assault that also involved drones and cruise missiles. Explosions were heard across the city after air raid sirens sounded, reports CNN

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said at least three people were injured and fires or damage from falling debris were reported in at least two districts of the capital.

Klitschko said people remained trapped inside a multi-story residential building that sustained heavy damage in the city's Podilskyi district.

The latest strike followed a warning Sunday from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said intelligence indicated Russia was "preparing a new massive strike."

Last Thursday, Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks on Kyiv since the war began, killing at least 30 people. It was the third-deadliest assault on the Ukrainian capital since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The attack came as world leaders prepare to meet Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey, for a NATO summit that President Donald Trump is expected to attend. Russia's war against Ukraine is expected to be a central topic of discussion.

Russian forces have intensified operations in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, one of the Kremlin's primary military objectives, while Ukrainian cities have faced near-nightly missile and drone attacks.

Ukraine has also expanded its long-range strikes in recent weeks, targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure, including oil refineries, ports and defense manufacturing facilities.

The renewed fighting comes a day after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a nearly 90-minute phone call on July 4. According to Russia's Foreign Ministry, Trump again offered to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
