Charlie Kirk's parents and his widow, Erika Kirk, are expected to attend next week's preliminary hearing for the man charged with fatally shooting the conservative leader, according to a source familiar with the family's plans who spoke with the New York Post.

The family is not expected to make public statements before or after the hearing, the source said.

Tyler Robinson is scheduled to appear in court July 6 for a preliminary hearing expected to last through July 10.

During the proceeding, prosecutors will present evidence in an effort to convince a judge there is probable cause for the case to move forward to trial.

The hearing is not intended to determine Robinson's guilt or innocence and is expected to provide the public with its most detailed look yet at the prosecution's evidence since Robinson's arrest in the days following Kirk's killing.

Kirk, the founder and president of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot in Utah last September.

His death prompted a multi-day manhunt before authorities arrested Robinson, who has been charged in connection with the killing.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Robinson has not entered a plea.

At a preliminary hearing, prosecutors typically call investigators and other witnesses to testify about the evidence supporting the charges.

Defense attorneys have the opportunity to cross-examine those witnesses and challenge the prosecution's case before a judge decides whether there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed.

Victims' family members often attend significant court proceedings, even if they choose not to speak publicly.

If the judge finds prosecutors have established probable cause, Robinson will be ordered to stand trial.

If the judge finds the evidence insufficient, some or all of the charges could be dismissed, although prosecutors may be permitted to refile them under certain circumstances.
