Trump Urges ICE to Resume Traffic Stops

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers must resume conducting traffic stops while enforcing the law, President Donald Trump insisted on Wednesday.

"We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.'s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal's hands."

His comments came one day after the DHS said it would halt the practice after ICE agents shot men in Maine and Texas.

DHS had ordered ICE officers nationwide to stop conducting routine vehicle stops, according to reports, and that there would be no more vehicle stops for now, with limited exceptions for cases involving criminal warrants or joint operations with other law enforcement agencies.

On Monday, ICE officers attempting to stop a vehicle in Biddeford, Maine, fatally shot Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national who was married and had a 3-year-old daughter.

An ICE spokesperson said an officer fired while "fearing for public safety." The FBI and local authorities are investigating, and DHS' Office of Inspector General has been notified.

Independent Maine Sen. Angus King said Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him the man who was killed was not the individual ICE agents had originally intended to arrest.

The Maine shooting came days after a fatal ICE shooting during a vehicle stop in Houston. Acting ICE Director David Venturella said Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national who had lived in the United States for decades, was also not the agency's intended target.

DHS said agents believed he resembled the suspect they were seeking and that an officer fired in self-defense after Salgado Araujo allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle.

The two shootings occurred amid the Trump administration's intensified immigration enforcement campaign and have fueled anti-ICE demonstrations in both states.

The Associated Press also reported the Houston agents were not wearing body cameras, although DHS has said those officers are expected to receive body-worn cameras within the next 60 days.

Trump also repeated his criticism of former President Joe Biden's border policies in his post.

"The men and women of ICE are doing a GREAT job, one that has to be done. CRIME IS WAY DOWN IN AMERICA, in many cases with numbers that haven't been seen in decades," he said.

"The Open Border Policy of Sleepy Joe Biden allowed 25,000,000 people to pour into our Country, unchecked and unvetted," Trump continued. "Many were Criminals, and we have to get them out. In order to do this, we must be strong, tough, and smart."

The president urged ICE officers to resume their work while exercising discretion.

"I.C.E., be judicious, fair and smart, and go back and do your very important job," Trump wrote. "Keep those Crime Stat Records coming! Remember, you are loved and respected in America."
