Iran proposed the 10-day ceasefire now under discussion between Washington and Tehran, The Jerusalem Post reported, citing two sources familiar with the negotiations.

The sources said Tehran put forward the proposal as U.S. strikes continue and President Donald Trump considers whether to resume a full-scale military campaign against Iran.

According to the Post, the proposed pause would allow negotiators to address the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, which the sources said triggered the current crisis over a memorandum of understanding signed last month. Tehran and Washington later declared the agreement was no longer in effect.

Officials from Qatar, Egypt, Oman, and Pakistan have presented the proposal to the United States while holding talks with both sides. During those discussions, the mediators also proposed establishing a "middle corridor" between Omani-controlled and Iranian-controlled waters to allow commercial vessels to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States is seeking a ceasefire lasting longer than 10 days, the Post reported, citing the two sources. Washington also wants at least a partial agreement on freedom of navigation through the strait before any ceasefire takes effect, with the remaining issues to be negotiated during the proposed pause.

One of the sources said that at least some officials within the Trump administration have described the Iranian proposal as "absurd" and "illogical."

A U.S. official told The Jerusalem Post that Trump is focused on ensuring Iran "pays a price" for violating the memorandum of understanding and for the deaths of American service members.

"The president will also ensure that Iran pays for the recent deaths of U.S. soldiers. These devastating blows will continue until the president decides otherwise, but talks between our countries are continuing," the official said.
