President Donald Trump on Sunday announced that the Department of the Interior will oversee the rebuilding of a Washington, D.C., golf course, which after completion could host major golf tournaments and will be open to the public.

In a lengthy Truth Social post after touring East Potomac Golf Links, Trump said the historic public course has fallen into disrepair after years of neglect but will be transformed into "one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World."

Trump said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, Fazio's son Gavin, and members of his staff joined him in inspecting the property, which sits along the Potomac River and offers sweeping views of the nation's monuments.

"It was determined that, on this fantastic site, with water and unparalleled views of D.C.'s Monuments, we will build one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World which, importantly, will also be made available to the Public," Trump wrote.

The president said construction will begin Sept. 1 under the supervision of the Interior Department, with Fazio serving as course architect.

Trump said the redesigned course will be built to the "Highest Standards of Golf" while remaining accessible to the public.

The president said the upgraded facility will be capable of hosting premier events, including the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, PGA Championship, and other PGA Tour events.

Trump described the current condition of the course as "virtually unplayable," citing dead grass, deteriorated greens, a failed irrigation system, inadequate filtration, and trees damaged by years of neglect that he said posed safety hazards.

The project is part of Trump's broader effort to restore and beautify the nation's capital.

In the same post, he highlighted completed renovations to dozens of Washington monuments, statues, and fountains, while touting repairs to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after what he called extensive vandalism by "Criminal, Radical Left Vandals."

The Wall Street Journal reported Trump has been considering redeveloping East Potomac Golf Links for months.

The historic public course is currently managed by the nonprofit National Links Trust, which offers low-cost public golf and has operated the property under a long-term lease with the National Park Service.

The Journal noted the administration has previously clashed with the nonprofit over control of the course.

The National Links Trust has said it will continue operating East Potomac until the National Park Service is prepared to begin a historic restoration.

Axios reported the renovation follows months of legal and administrative disputes over the future of the property.

The outlet said a recent agreement allows the federal government to move forward with restoration plans after litigation over the course’s future, making East Potomac Golf Links the latest in a series of high-profile projects Trump has launched to reshape Washington.

Trump said the restored course will "bring tremendous success and prestige back to Washington, D.C.," adding that it will serve championship golf and the public for generations to come.
