The left’s “long march” through our institutions has had dramatic effects in higher education, with many once serious fields of study reduced to indoctrination in progressive cliches. One of the worst is sociology.

Recognizing that, the state of Florida took action. In 2024, its university system removed Sociology 1000 from its general education requirements. It had, of course, been captured by leftists and they used it for their agenda. After a number of sociology profs in the state bragged that they were continuing as usual with Soc 2000, it too was removed.

What does all of this mean? In today’s Martin Center article, Professor Scott Yenor looks at the impact.

Yenor writes:

Sociology as a discipline has been bleeding students for more than a decade. Now, in Florida, sociology must compete for students without the assistance of being in general education, where departments can generally count on some enrollment because students must meet some requirement. Sociologists know that their jobs are on the line if enrollments do not stay sufficiently robust. Leaving the general education system may lead to program review, shrinkage, or elimination.

He documents the sharp declines in enrollment in sociology programs across the state. Yenor foresees program reviews that will accelerate the erosion of this field of study.
