The Wall Street Journal reports that Qatar and other unspecified “mediators” are working Monday to “push the U.S. and Iran into a new ceasefire.”

Now, under the old cease-fire, we regularly witnessed the Iranian regime failing to, you know, cease fire, which is really central to the concept of a cease-fire. Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz was closed, then declared it would unilaterally impose tolls, and fired and hit container ships and oil tankers, all of which violated the terms of the memorandum of understanding. And that’s not even counting the assassination plot.

In other words, the Iranian regime demonstrated, clearly and frequently, that any agreement signed with them is worthless, because they will break their agreement at the first opportunity.

So why would or should the U.S. go back to the negotiating table, in pursuit of another cease-fire-that-isn’t-a-cease-fire? Why on earth would anyone think that this next round of negotiating would be any more fruitful or useful than the previous rounds?
