MINT HILL, N.C. — Two Mint Hill police officers were wounded, and a man was killed Friday morning after a child custody exchange at a busy shopping center turned into a shootout, authorities said.

Police were called to an Edible Arrangements location in the Mint Hill Commons shopping center along Matthews Mint Hill Road at about 10:47 a.m. for a child custody exchange. During the interaction, police said the man pulled out a gun and began firing, prompting officers to return fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two officers who were struck by gunfire were initially described as being in critical condition, but by Friday afternoon, they were reported to be in stable condition.

No additional injuries were immediately reported, and authorities have not said what led to the 911 call or whether any bystanders were placed in immediate danger inside the store. Police said they would release more information as the investigation continues.
