Galveston Bay plane crash kills Mexican navy members, civilians, officials say

At least five people have died after a plane crash in Galveston Bay on Monday.

Sources tell FOX 26 that a plane went down in Galveston Bay west of the Galveston Causeway.

An X post from Mexico's Navy secretariat says the plane was conducting a support mission for the Michou and Mau Foundation, which assists child burn patients.

Mexican officials say a medical support plane tied to a Mexico foundation crashed near the Galveston Causeway on Monday. FOX 26's Angie Rodriguez reports confirmed information as of 9:30 p.m. Monday, and Anthony Antoine explains the local tie to the Mexico foundation.

The Mexican Navy confirmed eight people were onboard the plane: four naval crew members, and four civilians.

The Mexican Consulate in Houston tells FOX 26 that six people have died: all four crew members, a patient, and a doctor. 

One of those people is said to be missing and presumed dead.

A companion of the patient and a nurse reportedly survived the crash. 

The Mexican consulate said this information comes from the Mexican Navy.

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office (GCSO) says multiple agencies have been called to the scene. Agencies began clearing the scene at about 7:45 p.m.
