Trump Advocates for Naming Commanders' Stadium After Him

President Trump has reportedly privately pushed for the new $3.7 billion Washington Commanders stadium, which is to be built on the site of the old RFK Stadium in D.C., to bear his name as a tribute.

The team should probably focus its efforts on changing its nickname, which remains one of the worst in sports. But we digress.

Reports suggest that back-channel discussions have involved the team’s ownership group, led by Josh Harris. The Commanders hold the naming rights, which are typically reserved for corporate sponsors.

Trump will attend Sunday afternoon’s game between the Washington Football Team and the Detroit Lions.

A source tells ESPN that while the Commanders expect conversations with the President about the new stadium during the game, there have been no formal conversations to date.

White House responds to Trump-Commanders rumors

While the White House did not confirm that President Trump would like to see the Commanders’ stadium named after him, they sure dropped hints that it would be a good move on the team’s part.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt enthusiastically supported the idea.

“That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” she said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Another White House official told ESPN, “It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen.”

The network reports that stadium naming would be subject to approval by the District of Columbia Council and the National Park Service.

Attending game to honor veterans

President Donald Trump is set to attend the NFL Week 10 matchup between the Lions and Commanders. He’ll be there to observe the halftime veterans’ celebration as part of the league’s Salute to Service initiative.

Commanders president Mark Clouse is hyped.

“We are honored to welcome President Trump to the game as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country,” Clouse said in the statement.

“The entire Commanders organization is proud to participate in the NFL’s league-wide Salute to Service initiative, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, active-duty service members, and their families this Sunday.”

Trump has claimed credit for enabling the Commanders’ new $3.7 billion stadium project, with his administration exerting influence over key federal processes to facilitate its approval.
