Calls Mount for Deion Sanders to Retire After Latest Health Issue

Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has faced ongoing health challenges this year, including a recent diagnosis and major surgery for bladder cancer.

Now, his latest announcement has fans truly worried that he needs to prioritize his health over football right now.

During the Buffaloes’ game against TCU on Saturday, Sanders was seen sitting on the sideline and was visibly uncomfortable while managing his team.

In a post-game news conference, he revealed suspicions of new blood clots because he’s “hurting like crazy.”

“Cat’s out of the bag, all right. I think I’ve got more blood clots,” Sanders said. “It don’t make sense. I’m hurting like crazy. … I’m not getting blood to my leg. That’s why my leg is throbbing.”

Coach Prime said he has a doctor’s appointment scheduled for Monday where he hopes to get more answers.

Fans are worried about Deion Sanders

The Colorado coach certainly has some experience with what blood clots might feel like, so it’s disconcerting to think he may face the issue yet again.

Sanders underwent the amputation of two toes in 2021 due to blood clots and a 2023 procedure to remove a clot from his leg.

Despite these issues, Sanders remains committed to coaching. And fans on social media are thinking maybe that’s not such a good idea. At least until he can get these health matters under control.

“In all seriousness, Deion should retire,” one football fan wrote on X. “His health just does not need this stress and he’s not gonna build a contender at Colorado.”

“Deion, it’s okay to rest. We know your greatness. Give your body some time to heal,” another said. “Watching you yesterday was inspiring and concerning. It’s okay to rest, sir.”

The Buffaloes are just 2-4 in Sanders’ third season with the team. He just signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension with Colorado back in March.

His message to men

Deion Sanders revealed in August that he was diagnosed with bladder cancer and underwent surgery to remove his bladder due to a high-grade tumor, a fact he initially kept private.

Sanders’ medical team revealed that they “proceeded with the removal of the bladder tumor” and eventually removed the entire bladder.

In that moment, Deion offered advice for others.

“Men, everybody, get checked out. Because if it wasn’t for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn’t have stumbled upon this,” Sanders said during a press conference.

“Make sure you get the right care because without wonderful people like this, I wouldn’t be sitting here today because it grew so expeditiously,” he urged. “But please get yourself checked.”

Maybe that’s what is compelling Prime to be more open about his health issues this time around. A voice like his might motivate men to talk more to their doctors.

Hopefully, he gets some answers today and gets himself on the road to recovery rather quickly.
