Mamdani sets his sights on Colorado
You can hear John Denver’s “Country roads” at the U.S. soccer games. I remember that song way back whenever. In fact, I bought that song for a friend who was assigned as priest to a church in West Virgina. I told him to start his first sermon by saying, “Almost heaven West Virginia,” and watch the parishioners’ faces.

Another John Denver song may be heard soon in Colorado. The left may be singing “Rocky Mountain High” soon on election night. What we hear is that Colorado is next on Mamdani’s list of objectives. Let’s check this out:
The Democratic primary in Colorado’s 1st District represents the next best chance for the progressive wing of the party to pick up another win over an entrenched incumbent.

Rep. Diana DeGette, who has served in Congress for almost 30 years, is now fighting for political survival. She has sought to burnish her progressive credentials, with one recent ad touting her role as an impeachment manager during President Donald Trump’s Senate trial after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, while also emphasizing her support for ‘Medicare for All’ and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Melot Kiros, a 29-year-old doctoral student and former lawyer who immigrated from Ethiopia as a child, has argued that the 68-year-old incumbent isn’t adequately fighting for the district. She is backed by key politicians and groups on the left, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Justice Democrats, the Democratic Socialists of America and a handful of Democratic candidates who were successful in their insurgent bids.

Rep. DeGette is burnishing her progressive credentials, another way of reminding everyone that she hates Trump, too. We recall that Rep. Goldman reminded everyone of his progressive credentials, but it was not enough for the so-called Democratic socialists. I guess that last minute conversions don’t persuade these socialists!
A big topic in the primary is support for Israel. Anyone surprised?

Another big name is Senator Bennett who wants to be governor. He is fighting a challenge from the attorney general. The big issue appears to be who is going to be tougher against Trump, or whatever that means.
Sen. Hickenlooper is also facing a challenge from another progressive who thinks that the senator is just a go-along-to-get-along Democrat who voted for ten Trump cabinet nominations.

Who knows how all of this will turn out? Will the Mamdani run end in Colorado, or will it move on to another state? I don’t know, but this is clearly not your dad’s Democrat party.
