True or False: ‘Trump is a Nazi’

Accusing President Trump of being a racist Nazi fascist anti-immigrant dictator has become so commonplace that it blends in with the scenery.  Any time of day or night, news sources across the spectrum show people — many of them wide-eyed and foaming at the mouth (legislators, for example) — insisting that this is the case.

I keep waiting for a reporter to ask one of them, “What exactly is a Nazi?  What are their defining characteristics?  What has President Trump done that qualifies him as one?”

My guess is that they would say something like, “You know good and well what a Nazi is!” or, “If I have to explain it to you, you’ll never understand.”  Like all radical liberals in the public eye, they’ve gotten by for years saying anything they want without being held accountable.  They call the president names because they hear like-minded crazies do it and it sounds relevant.  They actually have no idea what a Nazi is.

This knowledge deficit is not entirely their fault. They probably went to schools where no one taught them about Nazism or Fascism or D-Day or anything else to do with World War II (known in some quarters as World War Eleven).  This is consistent with the rest of their education.  They can’t do simple arithmetic.  They can’t find France on a world map.  They can’t name their own state capital.  They’ve never heard of John Jay or Nathaniel Hawthorne.  What they’re taught while sitting in a classroom for twelve years is amystery.

And so, a brief tutorial.

The first characteristic of Nazism is an overwhelming sense of shame and cultural oppression.  The Nazi Party came into existence as a reaction to the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I and imposed crippling sanctions on Germany for its role as the aggressor.

Does Trump feel ashamed and oppressed?  No evidence presents itself.  On the contrary, he’s probably the least ashamed and oppressed person on the planet.

The most notorious characteristic of Nazism is rabid antisemitism.  This was a bedrock principle of the movement, blaming Jews for all the perceived problems in German society and infamously murdering six million of them.

Does Trump despise Jews?  His son-in-law is a Jew.  He has built stronger bridges with Israel and done more for the Jewish state than any president in American history.  However, plenty of Democrat lawmakers have publicly proclaimed their disdain for Israel and their support of its enemies by promoting Palestine, for example, or wearing an actual Nazi tattoo.  When will somebody call them Nazis?

Next, Nazis are anti-democratic.  They crushed the democratic system in Germany, killed its defenders, and instituted one-party rule.  Even the most casual look at America today shows we have a robust democracy.  Strong and outspoken as he is, President Trump is held in check every day by Congress, the Supreme Court, and hundreds of lawsuits filed against the administration nationwide.  If he were Hitler, he would simply declare all these institutions closed, eliminate his detractors, and take over the country.  He has shown no signs of doing that.  However, Democrats want to pack the Supreme Court, end the filibuster, undermine voter integrity and honesty in elections, make Puerto Rico the 51st state, and otherwise undermine the basic institutions of democracy — because when they can’t win fair and square, they throw out the rules.

Next, Nazis are anti-intellectual.  Dumb people are easier to lead.  Trump surrounds himself with smart, capable, proven colleagues and attracts followers of every education and station.  On the other hand, Democrats, many of them evidently paid, flood the streets in front of federal detention centers and lie down in front of cars, protesting the incarceration of murderers and other felons who otherwise would be running loose in the neighborhood holding up the local bodega.  That is dumb.

None of the other slurs against the president holds water, either.  Is Trump a racist?  On the contrary, he has been dismantling decades of institutional racism while liberals desperately hold on to their identity politics and race-baiting habits.  Should there be a Congressional White Caucus?  An NAAWP?  No, there shouldn’t.  Neither should there be divisive organizations of any kind in our government or society.

Does Trump hate immigrants?  His mother was an immigrant.  The First Lady is an immigrant.  Trump-affiliated businesses have given tens of thousands of jobs to immigrants.  Does he think lawbreakers should face consequences regardless of their immigrant status?  Of course.  Upholding the law is his job.

We could go on.  Fascist?  Dictator?  Look at the definitions, then look at the president and his track record.

Donald Trump is a fearless patriot who has done more to restore American institutions and rebuild American strength and prosperity than any president in generations.  He deserves our thanks and our support, not ignorant name-calling.
