I was also reared by Christians. My parents, particularly my Dad, were generous to a fault. If my Dad had two dollars and someone needed one, he’d be the first person to give it. He helped families buy Christmas presents, young couples buy paint for their first home, and a struggling single mom pay for a new AC in her car so her babies wouldn’t burn up in the Florida summer heat. He helped people with utility bills and even gave his time and labor to help people with repair projects around their home. He was generous to a fault.

That’s how Christians should be. We should see a need and meet it. We should help and not expect anything in return. We should assist and not even tell anyone about our good works. God even tells us that if we get praise and adulation for helping while we are here on Earth, we lose our claim to treasures in Heaven for our generous deeds. I’d rather have God’s praise than man’s. God’s gifts are always better.

Christians should never need the government to compel them to help the needy. In fact, we should actively keep government out of charity altogether. When the state gets involved, it starts imposing rules about who can receive help, when they can receive it, and how much they are allowed to get. Christians know those decisions are best made in consultation with the Holy Spirit. He should be our guide, directing our generosity. That will always meet real needs far more efficiently than any bureaucrat.

They raised you to understand that theft was wrong, and using force against others is also wrong.

Not only does forcing people to hand over their money at gunpoint breed bitterness—and yes, it is at gunpoint, since any law can ultimately be enforced by the barrel of a gun—but government is also notoriously terrible at managing money. Just look at the billions being scammed from our tax dollars right now in Minnesota.
