New York Post to expand west, launch California Post in early 2026

"We are at a pivotal moment for the city and the state."

The New York Post is heading to the West Coast and will be launching the California Post in early 2026.

Robert Thomson, CEO of the outlet’s parent company, News Corp, said in a statement, "Los Angeles and California surely need a daily dose of The Post as an antidote to the jaundiced, jaded journalism that has sadly proliferated. We are at a pivotal moment for the city and the state, and there is no doubt that The Post will play a crucial role in engaging and enlightening readers, who are starved of serious reporting and puckish wit."

The California Post will have its headquarters in Los Angeles, and will focus on covering news, entertainment, culture, sports, and other topics from a California perspective. The New York Post will be supporting the California Post with covering national and international news. The California Post will have a daily print edition, as well as a dedicated homepage online.

Serving as editor-in-chief of the new paper is Nick Papps, a veteran journalist with nearly two decades of experience, and expands the oversight of New York Post editor-in-chief Keith Poole. "He will now be responsible for covering not just New York, but California, the US, the world and perhaps, Mars," said Thomson.

Poole said, "This is the next manifestation of our national brand. California is the most populous state in the country, and is the epicenter of entertainment, the AI revolution and advanced manufacturing — not to mention a sports powerhouse. Yet many stories are not being told, and many viewpoints are not being represented."

The New York Post said that the Los Angeles area is home to the second-highest concentration of readers for the outlet, with 3.5 million monthly unique visitors across web properties, and 7.3 million statewide. This comes ahead of the 2026 elections, which will see the state elect a new governor, as well as the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and LA Summer Olympics in 2028.

As the Post is expanding its reach, other outlets have had to cut back. CNN laid off hundreds of employees in January, and in June, the company was reportedly expecting additional layoffs on the horizon as parent company Warner Bros. Discovery announced its corporate breakup. Other outlets, such as Vox Media, HuffPost, and NBC News, have seen layoffs in recent months.
