In a statement released by the Office of the Vice President, the couple announced the birth of Alec Neel Vance, saying both mother and son are doing well. "We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother."

Colfax was serving as vice president at the time. Before that, John C. Calhoun and his wife, Floride Bonneau, had a son, William, in 1829 while Calhoun was vice president.
