BREAKING UPDATE: Mass shooting at Brown University, at least 2 dead

There was a heavy police presence in the area of the university.

A shooting was reported on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday evening with multiple victims, according to police. Multiple buildings were locked down in response to the shooting. At least 2 people were killed in the shooting and eight people are in critical but stable condition.

Officials announced in a press conference that at least two people were killed in the mass shooting, and eight others were critically wounded by stable at the hospital. They said that the suspect is a male who was dressed in black. 

As the chaos started, a text was sent out to students that read, "Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself." School officials added in the alert, "Stay tuned for further safety information."

Providence Police said that there were "multiple shot" in the incident. "Multiple shot in the area of Brown University. This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice," a social media post said.

Police scanner information said that there were multiple victims reported on campus and there was a massive police presence on campus. According to the Brown Daily Herald, footage was taken of police who were helping people that were lying on the ground. Several building around the campus were put on lockdown.

President Donald Trump also announced that he had been briefed on the situation in a post to Truth Social. "I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene," he wrote.

Officials with the school had initially sent out a message that the shooter was in custody. However, it was later updated to say that the shooter was still on the loose and for students to shelter in place.

Student Katie Sun said that she was studying in the Engineering Research Center lobby when she heard gunshots sound off at 4:10 pm. "It was honestly quite terrifying. The shots seemed like they were coming from … where the classrooms are,” Sun told reporters. Other students spoke to the press about what took place. The shooting comes amid finals on campus as the semester was ending.

FBI Director Kash Patel said of the shooting in a statement on X, "FBI personnel are on the scene and assisting this evening after the shooting at Brown University and we will provide all capabilities necessary. Please pray for all those involved. We will update with more information as we are able."
