PULSE POINTS
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: The State Department has announced that the maximum number of EB-5 investor visas for Indian migrants has been issued. 📺 DETAIL: On Wednesday last week, the State Department announced that, as of June 5, 2026, all visas available for Indian nationals under the Employment-Based Fifth Preference (EB-5) program have been issued. Consequently, visa issuances have been suspended. U.S. embassies and consulates are barred from issuing additional visas. The suspension will be lifted on October 1, 2026, at the start of the new fiscal year. The EB-5 visa allows foreign nationals to obtain a U.S. Green Card, granting them permanent residence, by investing in American businesses. The program has overall and per-country caps set at the discretion of Congress. According to the current rules, EB-5 investors must invest at least $800,000 in an infrastructure project or specified area of employment, create or preserve at least 10 full-time permanent American jobs for eligible workers, or invest at least $1.05 million in non-infrastructure projects. 🎯 IMPACT: The suspension could delay plans for Indian investors aiming to buy permanent residency in the U.S. via the EB-5 program. The situation highlights the growing demand for investor visas among Indian nationals. Earlier this year, via the Visa Bulletin, the State Department announced that “sufficient demand and increased number use” for EB-5 from India could result in the program’s automatic suspension. Ongoing and unfinalized applications will likely have to wait until Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27). 📺 FLASHBACK: Last year, the State Department revoked over 85,000 visas across all categories, an all-time-high. Earlier this month, a Barack Obama-appointed judge blocked the Trump administration’s decision to raise the fee on H-1B visas to $100,000. The fee hike is an effort by President Donald J. Trump to encourage American businesses to hire American workers, rather than recruit from overseas.
