Sen. Jim Boyd Tapped as Next Florida Senate President

The Florida Senate Republican Caucus on Tuesday unanimously elected Sen. Jim Boyd as its next president-designate, setting up the veteran lawmaker and business owner to lead the chamber for the 2026–2028 legislative term.
Boyd, 68, will succeed Senate President Ben Albritton following the 2026 elections, assuming Republicans maintain control of the upper chamber. The designation continues the GOP’s more than three-decade hold on the Senate and signals a steady hand at the helm as lawmakers prepare for another period of population growth, fiscal constraint, and policy debate over Florida’s future.
Albritton, who presided over the ceremony in the Senate chamber, praised Boyd as a “dedicated family man and business owner” whose approach to governing is rooted in collaboration and principle.
“Jim always works to build consensus and has spent countless hours with senators on both sides of the aisle exploring and talking through ideas to make legislation stronger and bring tough and complex issues across the finish line,” Albritton said. He added that Boyd “is the right leader to carry on the legacy of Republican leadership in the Florida Senate.”
Boyd was nominated by Sen. Danny Burgess, who described him as “guided by conservative principles, not by convenience or popularity.”
Sen. Jay Trumbull seconded the nomination, calling Boyd a transparent and consistent leader who has built trust “not through promises, but through performance.”
In remarks following the vote, Boyd outlined a vision for a state where families feel safe, parents have a voice in education, businesses and innovators can thrive, and Florida’s natural resources are preserved. He pledged to “defend the taxpayer,” “stand firmly with law enforcement,” and “conserve Florida’s natural beauty so that it endures for generations.”
“Yes, we face challenges,” Boyd said. “Growth is stretching our infrastructure. Demand is testing our schools and health care system. The economy is changing in ways that require adaptation and resilience. But I believe in this chamber. I believe in the strength of principled leadership. I believe in the great state of Florida.”
Boyd was first elected to the Senate in 2020 after serving eight years in the House.
