Idaho Criminal Justice Teacher Arrested on Felony Charge for Abusing Minor Student - Slay News

An Idaho high school criminal justice teacher and former law enforcement officer has been arrested on a felony charge involving an alleged off-campus interaction with a teenage student, raising fresh concerns about student safety and oversight in public schools.
Troy Wayne McFadden, 46, a teacher at Ridgevue High School in Nampa, was taken into custody on June 11 following a three-week investigation by Nampa police.
He has been charged with sexual battery of a minor between the ages of 16 and 17, a felony offense under Idaho law that carries a potential sentence ranging from 25 years to life in prison.
Police say the investigation began after concerned individuals reported what authorities described as suspicious and inappropriate behavior involving McFadden and a student.

Police have not disclosed who initially reported the concerns or provided details about the alleged conduct underlying the charge.
Authorities have stated they currently believe the case to be an isolated incident and have no evidence suggesting additional victims.
However, investigators are encouraging parents to speak with children who may have had contact with McFadden and to report any potentially inappropriate behavior.

Before entering education, McFadden worked for the Idaho State Police as a regional communications officer.
He was hired by the Vallivue School District in August 2025 and taught criminal justice courses through the school’s Career and Technical Education program.
According to district officials, McFadden underwent the required criminal background screening before being hired, and no disqualifying issues were identified at the time.
The district has since confirmed that his contract will not be renewed for the upcoming school year.
The case has shocked many parents, given McFadden’s law enforcement background and his role in teaching students about the criminal justice system.
School District Responds

“The district is grateful that concerns were reported to law enforcement, allowing authorities to investigate the matter and helping support the safety and well-being of children in our community,” the statement said.
“The safety and well-being of students remain the district’s highest priority.”
The district did not address whether any concerns about McFadden had previously been raised internally before police became involved.

The arrest has renewed broader concerns about protecting students from misconduct by adults placed in positions of trust.
While background checks can identify prior convictions and documented misconduct, they cannot prevent future behavior or identify individuals whose alleged misconduct has never previously been reported.
The allegations against McFadden remain under investigation.
Still, many parents are asking how a teacher entrusted with educating students and serving as a role model ended up facing one of the most serious criminal charges available under Idaho law.
As the criminal case moves forward, families in the Nampa community are seeking answers about what happened, whether warning signs were missed, and what steps can be taken to ensure student safety moving forward.
