The holidays mean it’s engagement season, even and especially at the White House, where Donald Trump Jr. announced Monday that he popped the question to his socialite girlfriend, Bettina Anderson. You may recall that around this time last year, rumors of his romance with Anderson were swirling, mostly because at the time he was still engaged to his previous fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former Fox News personality and current U.S. ambassador to Greece. Did he ever end up breaking things off with Guilfoyle? Or is he in some sort of engagement double jeopardy situation right now that means that neither of them counts?

Anderson said yes, much to Trump Jr.’s relief. When you propose, “You’re not sure what the answer’s gonna be, it’s always a little bit rough,” he said before a podium at a White House Christmas event, perhaps inadvertently emphasizing that he is a veteran proposer, having now done this at least three times. (He was previously married to Vanessa Trump, and the two share five children.)

Anderson, in a red strapless dress, said a few words too, starting by thanking her future father-in-law for the privilege of being there and complimenting her future mother-in-law on the Christmas decorations. (She literally said, “These decorations, am I right?”) It felt a little obsequious, but since there have been some rumors that the president doesn’t approve of Anderson, maybe she felt it was necessary.

He ought to approve, especially since, if Don Jr. is using his father’s romantic life as any kind of model, he is right on schedule for Wife No. 2. The elder Trump married Marla Maples in 1993, at age 47, and wouldn’t you know it, Junior is currently 47 (with a birthday coming up at the end of the month, tick tock). Donald Trump also established a blueprint for wife hair-color succession—that blueprint being, naturally, blond-blond-brunette. If his father married two blonds before defecting to the only other hair color conservative women are sometimes allowed to have, then Don Jr.’s second marriage simply had to be to a blond like Anderson. Taking a look at her Instagram (bio: “I’m just your typical stay at home mom…only I don’t do household chores…or have a husband…or have kids..”), sometimes Anderson dabbles in darker hair, so hopefully she’s prepared for the amount of commitment and root upkeep that are about to be required of her.

Was Guilfoyle, famously brunette, ever presented with the blond-blond-brunette sequence and given the option to dye her hair? In addition to her ambassadorship, maybe she can find some solace in knowing that she never had a chance this time—and that she’s still in the running for Wife No. 3.
