Alaska Man Monday: Meeting Moose

redstate.com

Check this out; sometimes, in Alaska, you have to be careful just going to the post office:

This was a cow and her yearling calf. I managed to skirt around them and do in the post office’s side door, and around front, you could view them from about six to ten feet’ distance from a position safely inside the lobby. It was neat – and that cow moose, well, I’m 6’1”, and her shoulder hump was about at the level of the top of my head. Her calf was more or less the size of a cow elk. These are big critters – and we’ll have more of that in this week’s video. Until then:

Now, down in Wasilla, one dumb crook seems to be setting a new standard for dumb: Stealing stuff by renting it from a rental company, then trying to keep it.

That’s dumb.

On 11/11/25 at approximately 1830 hours, the Alaska State Troopers Criminal Suppression Unit (CSU) contacted 38-year-old Tyler Smith at his residence in Big Lake to follow up on multiple open theft cases.  CSU had received a report Tyler had rented some equipment from a rental company in Willow and failed to return it for over a month.  He did so with insufficient funds so they couldn’t charge him for the extended period of time.

Further investigation revealed Tyler had rented several other items from rental companies in Big Lake and Anchorage, which he then pawned at a pawn shop in Wasilla.  Each of these items were rented in September and were pawned almost immediately following the rental.  CSU recovered the items and contacted Tyler to interview him about the thefts and attempt to recover the equipment rented from Willow.  It was revealed the equipment was now in Soldotna, making immediate recovery impossible.  Tyler was arrested for six counts of Theft in the Second Degree and two counts of Theft in the Third Degree.  He was remanded at Mat-Su Pre-Trial and held without bail.

I’m not quite sure how Mr. Smith thought he was going to get away with this. When you rent something, they have all your contact information. Pretty sure they ask for an ID, too. This is taking dumb crooking to a whole new level of dumb crookery.

Alaska Man score: 1.5 of 5 moose nuggets. Mr. Tyler gets a point and a half for making us point and laugh.

Next, we have an Anchorage resident who saw something unusual: A bull moose dropping both antlers at once.

Christie Ericson had just returned home when she spotted a moose across the street.

“I had just gotten home from a meeting and was pulling into the driveway and saw the moose,” Ericson said. She added that while she frequently sees moose in her neighborhood, she rarely sees a bull with a full rack.

She stepped to the end of her driveway to take photos and short video clips when the unexpected happened.

“I took like maybe four or five little videos, which none of them were very good. I was trying to get a good shot. And then all of a sudden, they (the antlers) just dropped,” Ericson said.

Both she and the moose were startled.

What’s too bad is that someone else got to the antlers before Christie did.

After the moose moved on, Ericson checked checked her footage to confirm she had captured the split-second moment. When she returned outside to look for the shed antlers, they were already gone.

That happens. People prize shed antlers; they will never stay on the ground too long. But even so, Christie got some great video, and that’s not nothing.

Alaska Man score: 5 shed antlers.
