    Keeping Up With the Cabinet

    Sec. Agriculture - Brooke Rollins — Just as with energy, food independence is key to American success, and Rollins recently elaborated on that. 

    In 2023, for the first time in American history, the United States became a net importer of food. We inherited a deep hole, and we've spent the last 18 months working to dig our way out.

    We've made real progress, but there is still much work to be done. America should never have to rely on other nations to feed our people.

  • ❌ In Comans v. Executive Office of the President (removal of independent agency leaders - FEMA), Judge Michael Nachmanoff (Eastern District of Virginia) GRANTS plaintiff's motion for summary judgment as to Counts I and II and admin's cross-motion for summary judgment as to Count VII. [7/21]
  • ✅ In Appalachian Voices v. EPA (cancellation of Inflation Reduction Act grants), D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals VACATES district court ruling and remands for further determination as to mootness due to congressional rescission. [7/21]
  • ✅ In Mahdawi v. Trump (habeas), 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals VACATES district court order releasing P from custody; rules that plaintiff's claims must be raised via immigration process, not a separate habeas lawsuit, and remands case for dismissal. [7/21]
  • ✅ In Sosanova Rodriguez v. Ortega (habeas/mandatory detention), 5th Circuit Court of Appeals GRANTS admin's motion for stay pending rehearing. [7/21]
  • ❌ In Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services v. Noem (non-citizen invocation of asylum provisions), D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals DENIES admin's petition for rehearing en banc.
  • ❌ In Suri v. Trump (habeas), 4th Circuit Court of Appeals AFFIRMS district court; rules that federal courts retain jurisdiction to hear constitutional challenges to ICE detention during ongoing removal proceedings.
  • ❌ In African Communities Together v. Noem (TPS status - South Sudan), Judge Patti Saris (Massachusetts) enters order GRANTING plaintiffs' request for administrative stay upon 1st Circuit issuance of mandate to allow time to consider other issues/claims not decided by SCOTUS in Mullin.

    COMING ATTRACTIONS

    All eyes will be on the White House Correspondents' Dinner Friday evening, given the frightening turn the event took in April with the assassination attempt. Then, too, there's the somewhat fraught relationship between President Trump and the press. 

    The President is heading to Michigan next week for a rally ahead of the August 4 primary there. 

    MORNING MUSING

    All good things must come to an end, they say. Such is true for the World Cup (which, in my view, was a smashing success) and for Freddy's visit to the States. We've enjoyed following his adventures as he's traversed much of the country and shared his adventures on social media. 

    He bid farewell to the U.S. on Thursday, with a lovely message that he concluded with: 

    I heard this quote somewhere during the World Cup, and I think it sums up our experience perfectly:

    “If you want to hate the world, watch the news. If you want to love it, travel it.”
